Parent/Child Date Ideas

Need some ideas on a fun night out with your little one? Try these!

You don’t need an excuse to spend time with your child, but some parents like to schedule “dates” with their children not only to have one-on-one time with them but to prepare them for how they should treat (and be treated by) folks they date when they’re older.

Taking your child out for alone time, away from mommy or daddy and other siblings allows you time to learn about each other and especially for your child to see you in a different light.

When it comes to your day out, think of these guidelines: choose a place that engages your child, keep the time as free of technology as possible, and talk!

Here are some date ideas for you to try.

  • Classic dinner date. This is a great opportunity to teach your son how to be a gentleman. Show him how to open your door and pull out your chair
  • Go to the bookstore or library
  • Plan a scavenger hunt
  • Visit a museum like the Henry Ford
  • Go shopping for an outfit
  • Have a picnic on Belle Isle
  • Take a class together, like painting or cooking
  • Go for a hike or a nature walk
  • Play laser tag
  • Get up early, grab a donut then watch the sunrise
  • See a movie at the drive-in
  • Feed ducks at the park
  • Play mini-golf
  • Ride bikes
  • Go bowling
  • Surprise them at school and take them out for lunch (be sure to check with the school first)
  • Go to the arcade
  • Go to the pound to play with dogs
  • Visit the zoo
  • Get photos taken

Remember, it’s not about how much you spend but about the time you spend together. So, get creative and don’t be afraid to let spontaneity determine what you do on your date.
