First Birthday Party Ideas

Want to throw a party to celebrate your baby’s first birthday? Here are some tips that will help!

Baby’s first birthday is exciting for several reasons. It’s the first celebration thrown exclusively in their honor, and it’s a great excuse to have a party.

Consider how big or small you want this party to be. Let’s be honest, your child isn’t likely to remember any of this so you can do just about whatever you want. Just remember to take lots of pictures so you can show them later how you spent that milestone.

Get a cake or two! What’s a birthday without a birthday cake, after all? Consider getting a cake for your guest and another smaller one for your birthday boy or girl. Everyone will have a blast watching your little one tear into their cake and make a mess.

Keep it short. Unless you plan on having adult only events for guests after your child runs out of energy, then try not to have a party longer than two hours. If you go over this time, your guest of honor may get a little cranky.
Make a safe area for little ones to crawl around in. Whether you are having the party indoors or outside, make a play area for your baby and any other guests who need a safe place to play. Fill it with safe toys to keep them entertained. You can even set this space in the center of the room with places for adults to sit and watch around it.

Think of a theme. Picking a theme will make decorating so much easier for you because everything will match. You can go as vague as a color or as specific as a cartoon character. Whatever you decide to do let your guest know so they can plan accordingly.

Shave down the guest list. A first birthday may not be the best time to introduce your little one to all the friends and family they haven’t had a chance to meet yet. Avoid spooking your child by inviting people they are already familiar and comfortable with and introduce them to strangers one on one on a different day.

Time it right. If you can plan your party after your child’s naptime, you are likely to have a happier baby.

Keep it simple. Again, your child is not likely to remember any of this, nor are they likely to be excited about opening gifts or playing regular birthday games. Enjoy this opportunity to have a more low key party because it surely won’t be that way the older they get.
