City Highlight – Flat Rock

Get to know Flat Rock!

The area which we now call Flat Rock began as a settlement for the Wyandot peoples and functioned as a reservation through the 1830s.

The first settlers in Flat Rock were the Vreeland family who established a homestead sometime between 1811 and 1820, which included Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons. The Vreeland family built the first grain and lumber mill in the area but eventually sold off a majority of their land. There are still Vreeland decedents alive today in the city of Flat Rock.

The area became an official village in 1923 and then a city in 1965.
