First Foods Kids Can Learn to Make

Learning how to cook is an important life skill. If you want to get your kids started, here are some easy recipes they can try.

Pitta Pizza

Ingredients:

  • 4 Pitas
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Four Tbsp tomato sauce
  • 4 slices of precooked bacon
  • 1 8-ounce can pineapple chunks

Directions:

Step one: Preheat oven to 425° F.
Step two: Place pitas on baking sheet. Spread one tablespoon of sauce onto each pita.
Step three: Divide equal amounts of mozzarella over tomato sauce.
Step four: Crumble bacon and sprinkle over mozzarella. Add pineapple last.
Step five: Bake until cheese is melted, about 10-12 minutes.
Step six: Carefully remove from the oven and cut pita into four slices.

Chocolate covered strawberry overnight oats

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup sliced strawberries
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup oats
  • ½ banana, mashed
  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds
  • ½ Tbsp cocoa power (unsweetened)
  • ½ Tbsp maple syrup

Directions:

Step one: Mix all the ingredients in a Mason jar and close.
Step two: Store in the fridge overnight and eat for breakfast.

Sunflower Seed Sweet Toast

Ingredients:

  • 1 slice bread
  • 1 Tbsp low fat cream cheese
  • 2 Tsp plain sunflower seeds (no shell)
  • Honey

Directions:

Step one: Toast bread in toaster according to preference.
Step two: Spread cream cheese on toast.
Step three: Sprinkle sunflower seeds over toast and drizzle honey on top.

Lady Bug Apples

Ingredients:

  • 1 red apple
  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 Tbsp raisins
  • 2 pretzel sticks

Directions:

Step one: slice apple in half and scoop out the core using a melon baller.
Step two: Place apple cut side down and dap spots of peanut butter around red part of apple
Step three: Stick raisins onto the peanut butter
Step four: Stick pretzel into raison for antennae

Ham, Egg and Cheese Roll-Ups (adapted from delish.com)

Ingredients:

  • 10 eggs
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar
  • 1 cup baby spinach
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 20 slices ham

Directions:

Step one: Heat broiler. In a large bowl, crack eggs and whisk together with garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step two: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add eggs and scramble. Stir in cheese until melted then stir in baby spinach and tomatoes until combined.
Step three: on a cutting board place two slices of ham. Top with a big spoonful of scrambled eggs. Repeated until no reaming ham or eggs.
Step four: place roll-ups in a baking dish and broil for about five minutes or until ham is crispy.

Chicken Parmesan Sliders

  • 1 bag of precooked, breaded, frozen chicken breast.
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 2 cups marinara
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • 12 slider buns
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • ½ cup grated parmesan
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley

Directions:

Step one: cook chicken per package instructions
Step two: in a medium baking dish, lay bottom half of slider buns. Top with a layer of marinara, cooked chicken, mozzarella and parmesan. Top with top slider bun.
Step three: in a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, garlic powder and parley. Brush bun tops with butter mixture and bake at same temperature as chicken until cheese is melted.
